Electrical complaints

Complaints within the authority of the Electrical Licensing and Inspection Unit may include:

• Complaints of violations of the electrical licensing or electrical inspection laws, or of errors or inappropriate action by contract inspectors or department staff are handled in accordance with Chapter 214 and procedures established by the Office of the Attorney General.
• Licensees who violate the electrical act are subject to disciplinary action ranging from reprimands to license revocation depending on the severity of the infraction.
• Appropriate legal action is taken against persons who perform electrical work without a proper license, fail to file Requests for Electrical Inspection, or otherwise violate the statutes or rules.
• Upon written complaint of specific electrical code violations on rental property received from a tenant, the department will inspect the property as required by Minnesota Statutes, Section 504B and take appropriate action if violations are found.

If parties submit or are requested by a Department of Labor and Industry investigator to submit copies of confidential financial documents such as checks, bank statements or credit card bills, the agency encourages redaction (black out text or otherwise erase) of sensitive data like account numbers, bank routing numbers, Social Security numbers, etc.
