In 1971, the state of Minnesota established the "Minnesota State Building Code." This legislation placed the responsibility for administration of the code with the commissioner of the Department of Administration. Also this legislation directed the following:
Effective May 28, 1971
All local Building Officials appointed on or after May 28, 1971, must become certified by the Commissioner of Administration.
Effective April 1, 1971
All local units of government having a building code must appoint a local Building Official; local units of government failing to appoint a Building Official may have one appointed for them by the Commissioner of Administration.
Effective July 1, 1972
The State Building Code becomes effective, and mandatory for all local units of government having or adopting a building code.
The first certified Building Official was certified number 0001 December 31, 1972.
Through the years since there have been several forms of certification.
